A-Sides Event: Kevin Devine, Charly Bliss, and American Pinup to Heat Up Westchester

The Westchester County, NY music scene is a weird one. There are many bands doing their things, and several killer venues – such as The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester – but for the most part, audiences seem to only come out for established big name acts and cover bands. Let’s debunk that shall we? On June 23, A-Sides will test the mighty big in-between by putting on a show highlighting three stellar alt/indie rock acts. That evening at Garcia’s within the historic Capitol Theatre, indie rocker and celebrated songwriter Kevin Devine will headline a show with buzz bands Charly Bliss and American Pinup.

Devine, who has made a career of bouncing between the heavy (Bad Books) and the light (acoustic solo stuff), is touring in support of his ninth studio release Instigator, which is a deeply personal album that showcases the Brooklyn singer/songwriter’s mastery of storytelling. Similar to Devine, Charly Bliss are critical darlings. Unlike him, however, the Brooklyn band is just getting “warmed up” and I say that as Al Pacino in Scent of a Woman. The band, who released their debut album Guppy last month, have drawn comparisons to the best of what 1990s alt-rock brought us from Weezer to Letters to Cleo have been praised for their original brand of pop, rock and grunge.

Rounding out the lineup is American Pinup, a Yonkers-based band, who have become household names in Westchester and are about to break out into the mainstream at any minute – you know, like a Trump middle-of-the-night Tweet. Anyway, the band, who have released two full-length albums and an EP, have toured throughout North America and appeared at such festivals as Vans Warped Tour and SXSW.

About A-Sides with Jon Chattman – thisisasides.com

Jon Chattman’s music/entertainment series typically features celebrities and artists (established or not) from all genres performing a track, and discussing what it means to them. This informal series focuses on the artist making art in a low-threatening, extremely informal (sometime humorous) way. No bells, no whistles — just the music performed in a random, low-key setting followed by an unrehearsed chat. In an industry where everything often gets overblown and over manufactured, Jon strives for a refreshing change. Artists featured on the series include Imagine Dragons, Melissa Etheridge, Yoko Ono, Elle King, Joe Perry, Alice Cooper, fun, Bleachers, Charli XCX, Marina and the Diamonds, and Bastille.
